Uses of Composite Panels
There are many different types of composite panels that are generally used all over the world today. Each type of panel has a specific type of application and is suited for a particular requirement. The different types of composite panels as well as their relevant uses include, but are not limited to:
• Balsa panels: The mechanical properties of end grain balsa make it ideal as a core for sandwich construction. It has extremely high strength and stiffness to weight ratios, and achieves an excellent bond with epoxy resins and adhesives. End grain balsa has excellent fire performance, good sound and thermal insulation and high impact strength.
• Foam: Foams are used as structural sandwich core materials to provide low weight, excellent stiffness, good impact strength, good sound and thermal insulation. They are ideally suited for structures subjected to both static and dynamic loads.
• Strips: The unidirectional fibre in allows the planks to conform to highly convex or concave contours, and can provide up to 50% of the total laminate. The stiffness of the DuFLEX Strips allows them to bend fairly over half the number of frames required by other strip systems, and increases the stability when turning a boat hull.
• Customised orders: Core, fibre-orientation and ply schedules can be based on design, or engineering, specifications to best meet weight targets, stress and impact loads, and other design parameters.
• Bonding angles: Bonding angles are faster and easier to install than standard taped joints and ideal for inaccessible areas where fibreglass taping would be difficult.
• Pre-fabricated kits: In addition to plain and scarfed DuFLEX Panels, ATL manufactures pre-cut, ready to fabricate kits. Computer aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM) processes, combined with computer numeric control (CNC) equipment allows the production of pre-fabricated DuFLEX Kits.
