Filming A Homemade Masterpiece In The Digital Age

Making, distributing and sharing films has never been as easy as it is in the digital age. Massive advances in technology and software has meant that the only real barrier to getting active in the entertainment industry is the time and effort involved. If you are truly committed to sharing your vision, there are plenty of avenues to follow and technologies to help you along your way, all of which can be adapted to suit a variety of budgets. From small digital recorders to large handheld cameras, by making the most of the equipment available, budding filmmakers can prime themselves for artistic success.
What's more, with such a variety of video sharing sites online, you can rest assured that you'll have an arena to display your finished product, whether you want to make a music video, a short film or your own documentary. These days, all you really need to achieve your dream is some determination, a budget that will allow you to buy or rent some basic equipment and a willing team of helpers.
The piece of kit that you just can't do without when making a video is a camera. Whether you are able to beg borrow or steal a professional camera or you're just making the most of the family camcorder, the first thing you need to do is make sure you are completely familiar with all of it's settings. There is nothing more disheartening than realising you have accidentally filmed something without sound, for example.
While you may be keen to get out there and get started, it's really important to make sure you and all of your crew are completely up to speed on all of the technology you are using. This holds true for all lighting and sound equipment too. The last thing you want in a romantic scene is a glare or lens flare obscuring your star's face and in moments of high drama you'll be very upset if you find your boom mike has been picking up the background noise instead of the dialogue.
There are a number of additional bits and pieces that will make life easier when filming too, such as a good tripod to help you avoid the shaky-cam look and a light meter to help you judge whether the film you shoot is going to end up clear. Don't forget to carry out a light test each and every time you begin filming if you want to make sure your colours are spot on.
Very importantly, don't forget to take your charger or spare batteries with you whenever filming on location. However, if you're planning a bit of an epic in an out of the way location and are planning some big scenes needing some intricate lighting, sound and camera work, you could find that the generator hire is the best way to make sure you have all of the power you need for your electrical equipment - you should be able to get a generator that is specially designed to run quietly for those making films.
Once you've got your footage and you've spent some painstaking hours editing it to perfection, you'll be ready to show your masterpiece - don't forget to say thank you to all the friends who helped you along the way though.
