For example, the f9 can be placed 1 - 2 feet above the cymbals of a drum kit and still pick up plenty of sound, whereas for a acoustic guitar, the mic will need to be placed within 8 - 12 inches to be effective. Allow a distance of 2-3 feet between microphones to avoid phase issues. Phantom power operation:The f9 will NOT operate without phantom power. The f9 requires 12-48V phantom power, which is available on most professional mic preamps and mixing devices. If phantom power is not available on your equipment, you will have to purchase a phantom power supply (such as the Nady SMPS #180162, or ART Phantom I #180266) ). AKG Perception 100 or Shure Sm57 or some other microphone?
I'm buying a microphone for recording at home. Especially (grand)piano, acoustic guitar, vocals and maybe winds and electric guitar. Should I get the AKG Perception 100 or Shure Sm57 (both are on sale for 99e). Or perhaps perception 200 or something entirely different? My budget is around 100-150e. I hear a large-diaphragm condenser is good for picking up details in acoustic instruments.
Also, should I pay attention to preamps? I'm thinking of buying a small mixer which at least provides the phantom power. So does this include preamp and what's the role of a preamp in the sound? Do I need it for recording on my computer?

This is my first real microphone, so it's intended to be an all-in-one general purpose mic.
'though the SM57 and 58 are fine dynamic microphones worthy of their place in any recording studio, for acoustic instruments you should consider a condenser mic for the cleaner, crisper sound.
You are only going to need a mixer if you are going to record several sources at once - you're right that a mixer would give you the phantom power that you will need for a condenser mic, however some condensers can be fitted with batteries to negate the need for phantom power.

follow the link to 'multi-track recording' this was done using free (AUDACITY) software and a condenser with a AA battery -these condensers are excellent and not too expensive. A pre-amp would enable you to gain more control over the recording as generally you have to crank the volume up to maximum to get one of these mic's to record onto a PC.
A pre-amp is a small amplifier that boosts the output to a level that another device such as a full-blown amplifier or recording needs. Some mixers include a pre-amp, check the specifications if you're not sure...
