How do I get my microphone to work?
Okay, So I brought a microphone, last year or so, And it's been working fine until today.. See, last night I got my computer re-formatted(cleared everything off) and changed from xp to vista, I can't install my mic as there was no disk with it, cause it didn't need one.
I can't send voice clips on msn, nor talk in skype conferences.
My sound is working perfectly it's just my skype.

If you installed an O/S, then you will need to reinstalled the programs you were using as the Registry keys have been rewritten and no longer contain the necessary install keys for your software. Also, for those that need drivers, you will have to locate and install the drivers again as they more than likely got wiped from the Drivers folder.
Check in Device Manager for any Yellow/Red warnings next to the devices listed. Expand out as needed.

To set up a microphone:
Microphones vary greatly in design and purpose. They will continue to develop and become more specialized. Consult the microphone manual for hardware and software specifics; however, most models install in a similar fashion.
Locate the sound connections and connect the microphone jack to the computer. Most computers use an internal sound card and often the connections will be in the back of the system.
These will be a series of connections the same size and diameter as the microphone jack. One will be labeled as the microphone connection, either with a small icon that looks like a microphone or explicitly labeled as such.
Plug the microphone into that connection.
To test the connection:
Open Speech in Control Panel. Select the Speech Recognition tab. Speak directly into the microphone. The sound level should register in the Microphone Level indicator.

To set up microphone options:
The audio input line may be selected.
Open Speech in Control Panel. On the Speech Recognition tab, click Audio Input, and then click Properties.
Select either Use automatically chosen line or Use this audio input line.
Use automatically chosen line sets the input line to a default that is determined by the speech system. Because of differences in drivers, capabilities and languages used, there might be variances in the selected option. The selected default may not work with all options. If the device line does not work properly, you should manually select a new line using Use this audio input line.
