My biggest gripe with combat in The Red Star is the lock-on. Holding the right shoulder button with no one in particular in front of you will lock your focus in a particular direction so that you can strafe.

This I like, as it's needed to blow floating mines and such to smithereens. If there's someone in front of you, holding the right shoulder button will lock onto the enemy -- but only if they're directly in front of you. The lock-on is extremely picky. If something's behind you and about to attack, the game doesn't know to lock to them -- it'll just do the strafe option for the nothingness in front of you.
Even when there's a glowing weak spot of a boss in front of you, the game won't lock to it unless you're on top of it and exactly lined up. I found this to be a bitch while trying to dodge the floating death and score a critical hit.
I only played a bit of the PS2 version, so I can't make any major comparisons. I know that Micah Seff, the former IGN writer who reviewed that version, complained about the game being a bit too tough with the inability to change the difficulty setting, health packs being placed too close together, and the lack of in-level checkpoints. I didn't have a problem with the health packs or difficulty, but you still can't modify how tough the game is and if you die on the mechanical boss at the end of a level, you will still need to replay everything from the start of the chapter.

That only happened once or twice for me, though, so it might not be as big of an issue as before. One sad note is that The Red Star is single-player only on the PSP -- it featured two-player co-op on the PS2.
