Is recording with a USB Microphone noiseless?
I always get noise (feedback from the computer) when I am recording. Can a USB microphone solve this problem?
I use a regular mic that I plug in the audio jack and that creates buzz. I tried plugging through a Behringer Eurorack but with same results. Is there a relatively simple way of getting clean sound, for voice and acoustic guitar?
Philip L has a good answer, but there may be more going on here. For one thing, computer power supplies are always switching supplies and they generate pulse-like noise. If they aren't extremely well filtered (ie, if they're cheap), this noise gets out of the PS case and may well get into other circuitry, like the audio card.
Here's a test: Plug you mike into the Eurorack mixer and then plug a set of headphones into the "Phones" jack at the top of the mixer. Do NOT plug the mixer into the computer, but do have the computer on. Do you hear any buzz? Really crank up the volume. Anything?
If there's a buzz, turn the computer off. Buzz go away? If so, that proves the computer is not only making the noise (very likely), but that it is radiating it outside the computer case itself. Following Philips advice and using balanced shielded cable with XLR plugs may help a lot, but using a different computer may be the only real solution.
If the buzz did not go away when you turned the computer off, then obviously the computer is not making the noise. The mike itself can't, but that cheap wall-wart powersupply than came with the Eurorack might be, so try a different one of those. If the buzz is still there, then it's coming from something else in your area and I can't help. Again using Philip's cable suggestion may help.
If there was no buzz when unplugged from the computer, then the noise has to be from the computer itself. Unfortunately it gets expensive to experiment now. Try a new sound card. If you're using the audio capabilities built-in to the motherboard, this may help, and it will certainly improve the audio quality in any case. Or, replace your noise-making power supply with a much higher quality one. PC Power & Cooling makes the best.
Frankly, none of this may solve the problem. Which is why professional recording studios never record to computer. Some may record on disks, but most still use magnetic tape. Most do use digital recorders now.
