Difference between a shoe and windscreen.?
What's the difference between a show for a microphone (black spongy) and a windscreen (soft furry)
A shoe on a camcorder is a place to mount a bracket for a mic or video light - or both. Commonly referred to as an accessory shoe, these can be cold (no power or no connection to the camera's electronics) or hot (some sort of power or control connection to the camera's electronics).
A "black spongy" - most folks call them a "wind screen" covers the microphone element and tries to prevent the low rumble when wind passes over the mic. They don't work too well - especially if it is really windy. They are most commonly seen on dynamic mics.
A "soft furry" - these have lots of names... Rykote calls them "Softies", they are also called "zeppelin" or "dead cat" - because that's what they look like, I guess. They are most commonly seen on shotgun mics mounted on a boom.
In both cases, the goal is to create an area of "dead space" near the mic element where there is no air movement. The softies tend to work better because the fiber filaments do a better job of creating that dead-air space.
