The Legend of Zelda series has been around in one form or another since 1986. Its puzzle based game play has won it critical acclaim many times over and it has sold over 57 million copies since the release of the first game. So what’s the latest Zelda instalment for the Nintendo DSi like and does it live up to the name?
When Nintendo released the last Legend of Zelda game on the GameCube, there were a few that were not happy about the “kiddie” looking cartoon graphics. If you were one of them, then I suggest get yourself a stiff drink and sit yourself down because it’s back. Despite this wind walker was a runaway success and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass looks to follow in its footsteps.
The Nintendo DSi’s touch controls play a large part in this current version of the game. When I say “large” I mean “total”. Everything in Phantom Hourglass is controlled with the stylus and overall it works well. I found fighting can be a little tricky with some of the moves but I got used to it soon enough and began to really get into it.
I found puzzle solving with the stylus to be a fantastic development for the series. Having the stylus allows the game to offer some completely new types of puzzles and allows you to draw directly on your map which is brilliant. Now that I have played Phantom Hourglass on the DSi, I realise that the Zelda series has been dying for a touch screen platform to arrive ever since 1986. It really is that good. In addition to the touch-screen gameplay Nintendo have incorporated the dsi’s built in microphone into the game as well. In parts you are required to blow out fires or play instruments using the mic.
Now for those that were upset about the cartoony graphics in The Wind Waker...... get over it. Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is a visual treat and I would have to say one of the nicest (if not the nicest) game available on the DSi platform. Detailed cut scenes look fantastic and give a real cinematic feel while the top down view during game play keeps things clear and uncluttered.
The audio in Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is also well done. Clear, crisp sound effects make it pleasurable. Unfortunately the Music can get somewhat repetitive although I find this to be a Nintendo trait so I have come to just accept it over the years. Luckily for Phantom Hourglass though it is a small gripe as the rest of the game absolutely rocks! Every DSi owner should own this game.
I downloaded my copy of the game for free from the DSi Download Centre as I have a membership there. Memberships are only $39 for an entire lifetime and you can download as many games as you like for free after signing up. They have all the latest release games as well as the classics. I recommend you go and check them out and never pay for another DSi game again.
