How To Make A First Impression Based On Trust And Image
Now you can match your bow tie, or necktie with a lapel badge, cufflinks. And choose the colours and patterns that women are attracted to, the next time you go shopping for clothing and accessories take your girlfriend or wife for a second opinion.
Chances are their choice will be in complete contrast to yours, men generally play it safe, habitually selecting the same colours and patterns such as stripes because they are afraid of negative opinions that their male friends or work colleagues are likely to make.
So this is a good time to be more resolute in the abandonment of old habits in favour of developing new and changing habits.
It's all part of image control and maintenance, which in business is crucial, you're constantly in the position of creating the first impression, particularly when networking; you have 60 seconds to make an impression and get your message across.
On the subject of networking; The other week I attended a WIIFM breakfast meeting, WIIFM translated means "What's In It For Me" "It's About You" a networking concept based on the "Total Relation Management" philosophy, a principle based approach to building relationships through trust, respect, mutual consideration and friendships, sincerity is the key to success.
WIIFM came to fruition when a small group of sales, marketing, financial planning and business coaches were having coffee at an early morning city café. "It's about being in the right place and the right time"
It just so happened I was in the right place at the right time and met one of the innovators of WIIFM. At my second breakfast meeting one of the founding members commented very positively on my choice of Matching Lapel Badge, Silk Tie and Cufflinks, a landmark statement that confirmed my market research.
So I made the right impression without even saying a word. When it came to addressing my infomercial I already had the audience's attention, so getting the message about the core nature of my business across was easy.
In your personal and professional life others will take note of your dress and judge accordingly, having said that, if you radiate a strong sense of sincerity, are openly true to your convictions, believe in what you are doing, then, others will soon detect these qualities regardless of how your are dressed. This does not mean slovenliness is OK, because you have to break down the initial barrier of judgment. Secondly, build trust as a basis of relationship building.
The man that introduced me to WIIFM offered the loan of a most treasured book from his extensive library. On handing it to me he commented, "I don't lend my books to anyone, because they never get returned" then he said "but I like and trust you, so please have a read of this and return it to me in one week". My philosophy was confirmed, in only two very brief meetings I had built trust through sincerity. Although I am a pretty snappy dresser, I was wearing converse sneakers while my attire was far more than casual. Of course noticed, but made positive comment. You can't completely judge people accurately based on the way they dress.

The title of the book is TRM "Total Relationship Marketing" by author Mel Kaufman. Profound best describes its contents, confirming all that I have believed about developing business relationships based on commonalities of trust, respect and kind consideration.

It is important to remember that when you are networking everyone has to be perceived as a peer. Rip off your corporate badge of ego and treat everyone as an equal whether you're a business baron or a bus boy a ceo or a secretary a judge or janitor, it makes no difference because information is the key. It is information that levels the playing field. In fact a secretary with her finger on the hold button knows more than the CEO will ever disclose. You cannot see eye to eye when you are looking down the nose at another.
Truth is constant corollary
So make a first impression to grasp attention and pave the way to being noticed and heard. Wear a vivid silk tie, or lapel badge, and you can complete the collection with a matching pocket square, but, most importantly, be truthful.
