Sonnox Oxford Inflator (PowerCore) Software Download $350 The Sonnox Inflator for TC PowerCore is a unique process that can provide an increase in the apparent loudness of almost any programme, without obvious loss of quality or audible reduction of dynamic range, yet avoiding damaging increases in the peak level of the signal. The inflator process can also bring power, presence and warmth to programme material and even provide headroom overload margin above digital maximum with a subtlety and musical character reminiscent of tube systems.Use the Inflator to produce louder mixes than you thought possible without overloads or compression pumping, or use it to add natural warmth and character to acoustic or jazz mixes.GeneralNo matter how limited and crushed program material already is, the Inflator will provide even more loudness. It will even add apparent volume to a full-scale white noise signal, or add musicality to previously clipped signals.The Inflator was developed in response to requests from mixing and mastering engineers who are required to compete on the basis of the overall apparent loudness of their final results. Its capable of producing much louder mixes without overloads or compression pumping. Since it is truly a real-time process, there are no time constants involved, as would be the case with limiters and compressors. Use it on single instruments to add presence, softness and depth, or use it on percussion and drum tracks to produce amazing dynamic presence, tightness and volume. The full dynamics of the program is largely preserved but with an increase in the average modulation density.A further aspect of enhancement provided by the Inflator involves the creation of warmth reminiscent of good 'tube' or 'electronic valve' systems. Significant 'musical overdrive' can be achieved working especially well on individual tracks.Input SectionThe input section can be used in two ways. If the CLIP 0dBr button is selected, then the input clips at 0dB, in the same manner as any normal input. As soon as the signal reaches levels of 0dB or greater, overloads will be indicated by the meters. If the CLIP 0dBr button is off, the Inflator is able to process signals beyond the equivalent of the normal digital maximum. The effect is to bring transient events in the programme forwards, or push them into to the background, such that the attacks of instruments can be accentuated or softened depending on settings.The application was developed to address the common situation where there is a need to selectively tighten up percussive instruments or soften the unwanted percussive effects of acoustic musical instruments. Such effects are easily achieved with the Transient Modulator because its purpose-designed adaptive processing acts on differential information in the program so that the overall long-term program level is minimally affected and sensitivity to control parameters is drastically reduced.The functions of the Transient Modulator are adaptive and totally dependent upon dynamic level changes within the signal. In other words, it will have no effect on a steady state signal, such as a continuous tone which does not change in level. Any control signals it develops are purely dependent upon the extent and rate of change of signal levels.Gain,Threshold & DeadbandWhen the RATIO fader is set positively, significantly larger peak levels can be produced, with potential to increase them up to 24dB greater than the original signal. Conversely, negative ratio values can reduce the overall levels significanlty, therefore the GAIN fader has been designed to operate over a considerable range.Unlike the rest of the processing in the Transient Modulator, the THRESHOLD knob sets an absolute value. Other processing is tracking changes in the waveform and is not related to any absolute setting. In this case, only signals above the THRESHOLD knob setting will be processed. The greater the signal level above the threshold, the greater the effect, the Transient Modulator will have.The DEADBAND knob sets a window below which transient changes will remain unaffected, preventing unwanted modification to lower level signals.Ratio & OvershootThe RATIO fader sets the amount of instantaneous change, positive or negative, to the signal. The amount of processing necessary to allow a detector for each process would be far too great for current processor capabilities, if done correctly.Feed-Forward ArchitectureThe type of architecture in the Oxford Dynamics uses feed-forward techniques. In this case, a tiny delay is introduced into the signal path. (The amount of delay is virtually insignificant, and can be compensated for, in order that all signal paths are aligned, in any case.) This delay allows time for the side-chain control signal to be generated so that it can coincide exactly with the signal it will control. This technique allows very accurate control of the audio levels by generating totally precise control signals, thus preserving audio quality.GateThe gate acts like a switch, where signals below the THRESHOLD setting are attenuated, according the the RANGE control setting. This type of function is useful for suppressing unwanted background noises, such as tape hiss, where the wanted signal is well defined.
