iPod 8 GB touch - Excellent
It works just fine. The screen is bright and easy to read, even when the type is small. Lots of nice features. If you want to test drive it before buying, try a friend's iPod touch; or go to Best Buy, Wal-Mart, or some other store. I won't rehash the other reviews; here are some different things to note:
I got rid of my netbook and use this instead, because it is much much smaller and easier to travel with. Keep this in mind if you decide to use this in place of a netbook or laptop: Some hotels do not have wireless, but just an ethernet cable in the room. That means you can't use your iPod to connected to the Internet. You can get around this by buying something like the ASUS WL330GE Wireless pocket access point. There are other companies that make something similar.
I got the iPod 8 GB touch for the following apps: the Bible, foreign language translation. The Olive Tree Bible applications are the best. And there are several foreign language translation apps that will speak back pre-determined phrases as well as phrases/sentences that you type. And there are many other helpful and fun apps too.
I also got an iPod 8 GB touch 2nd Generation as a refurbished unit directly from Apple. It didn't work. Apple tech support was very easy to deal with, and shipping was free (next day UPS, both ways). I was impressed by Apple support. So, if something goes wrong with this 8GB unit, it should be easy to get it fixed.
Another thing to note: When you buy applications (or other stuff) on iTunes, you only buy it once. So, I bought the Olive Tree KJV Bible, and I can add it to both of my iPod 8 GB touch (but only pay for the app once). So, once you make a purchase, the item is yours regardless of how many iPods you have in your family. And you do have to pay for software upgrades, but they are only $5. Hopefully Microsoft won't catch-on!

iPod 8 GB touch - Should have done more research
My wife and I share an iPhone 3Gs. Actually, I use it the most and she's been complaining of being an iPhone widow. I bought the iPod 8 GB touch as a chrismas present for her. I spent the extra money for the 8g version because of the Voice Command feature that she likes on the iPhone, Boy was I surprised and mad whe I discovered that the product doesn't have a built in microphone, I can;t see my wife digging into her purse to hook up the earphone/microphone that comes with the iPod 8 GB touch. You would think that for the price they charge, Apple could afford to provide a built in microphone!! I learned my lessen. CHECK IT OUT BEFORE YOU BUY IT!

iPod 8 GB touch - Love the Ipod, not crazy about itunes
iPod 8 GB touch is my first Ipod and it's really impressive. Alot of good ideas went into this. What I'm not crazy about is Itunes. Not for an advance computer user. Not enough control. Can't even get into the subfolder levels to select images to import. If you're files are all set up the way Windows does things for you, you'll be fine. If you've got things set up your own way to be better organized you'll be alittle irritated.
Would like to be able to access the Ipod on the folder level and drag and drop and build my folder structure the way I want to. Maybe I'm missing something. Ipod = great, Itunes = not so great. Amazon did good, tried super-saver shipping until I saw how long it would take to send it out, changed to normal shipping and they sent it out that day.
