Best Drum Kit Microphone Placement/Types for Recording?
We are wanting to do some recording with our drummer. We are an typical alternative garage rock band. Problem is we don't know best placement/types of microphones. We are limited on mics; have a max of 4 (maybe 5) mics that we can use. With little knowledge I'll give you what I know on the kit. He has a kick drum, hi-hat, 2 toms, snare, floor tom, and 4 different symbols (ride, crash, etc.). I figure we need a overhead mic for symbols, snare, kick drum, and tom. But where exactly and what types of mics (condenser/dynamic) are needed is our concern. We are new at recording, so if you think we know...we probably don't. Barney style please!

The truth is you don't need to mic every piece of the kit to get a good drum recording. One or two well placed mics can record drums very well.
