How do I hook up a standard uni-directional microphone to my Vista computer?
I bought a cheap philips unidirectional hand held microphone so my kids can sing karaoke on the computer...but I can't seem to get it to work. It has a standard plug...not a usb plug. I put it in the mic spot on my computer but it won't work. I went into "sound" on my computer and can't even find it. There doesn't seem to be a "driver" for this. Do I need a USB mic? Or is there someway to get this to work?

that didn't work. under "sound" there is listed two "microphone" icons and a "line in" icon. All say "not plugged in" even though my mic is plugged in. I chose the one that says "front jack" and it says it is working...sound is up...but it isn't working. there is no place to add a new microphone. it is as if the jack is turned off or something...
i also went under device manager...under the "sound" tab there is only "high definition audio" and "usb audio". nothing about a mic. I can't seem to find where to "add" a microphone...
Go to Start, control panel, System. A window will open with system info and tabs on the top. Select the Hardware profiles tab and look down the list for sound devices and look for the microphone. Then you can load a driver there and if you cant find the driver, use a standard driver or generic however it is listed. If there is a driver loaded then you may have a bad mic. so check it on another device
