my computer drops the internet when we get phonecalls?
we have all cordless phones in the house and im on wireless in my room, i cant switch to a wired connection and the wireless point is downstairs, is there anything i can do to stop dropping when someone calls me, it messes with playing games online.
I expect that most (if not all) of your wireless phones are "2.4Ghz phones." This is the same frequency range that your wireless internet uses. I suspect that when you get a phone call, all of those phones race to grab an unused channel and cause a great deal of interference in that part of the wireless spectrum. One or more of them probably end up on the same frequency as your wireless and cause enough interference for your connection to get interrupted.
I suggest (if possible) that you look into getting some wireless phones that do not operate on the 2.4Ghz spectrum. 900Mhz phones are the best (in my opinion). The sound quality won't be quite as good, but you will get better range out of them and they won't interfere with your wireless internet.
You might also check the channel your wireless internet is using. This will be a setting somewhere in your router's administration page. It might be set to "Auto." I have had better luck using channels on the "edge" of the spectrum (such as 1 or 11). But you might try a few and do some testing to see if any of the channels are less prone to interference from the phones.
Another option would be to switch to a "Wireless-A" (or 802.11a) network. Note that this will require a new set of hardware for your wireless network (both for the computers and the router), as most network cards do not support 802.11a. However, it runs on the 5.4Ghz spectrum, so it won't be subject to the same interference. Replacing the phones would probably be a cheaper alternative, but I thought I'd through that one out there.
Just a note, and I assume you've looked into this based on your question, but this problem only affects computers connected wirelessly, right? If it also affects wired computers and you have DSL, make sure all your phones have filters connected to them. If they don't, a poorly engineered phone could interfere with your DSL.
