How do I record with a condenser mic on a PC?
I have a "MXL 990 Vocal condenser mic" and it is connected to the mic jack. But where do I go from here? I have been using regular pc mics, but I've upgraded but my computer doesnt seem to detect it. I got it off of someone, and there is no software.
Condenser mics require phantom power in order to operate. That's a DC voltage (nominally 48 V) that's sent down the mic cable to the mic.
Without phantom voltage, you get nothing out of the mic.
You'll need a mic preamp that can deliver phantom voltage. Then, go out of the preamp and into the Line In on the sound card. Look for "mic Preamps" on Musician's Friend. You can spend anywhere from $50 to $3000.
