All About Hip Hop Beats
To make modern hip hop beats there many elements in the production including samplers, synthesizers, drum machines, turntables, as well as live instruments. While hip hop beats are in all parts of hip hop music they generally refer to all the instrumental parts of hip hop other than the lyrics. This means that hip hop beats take a great deal of production to be done right. The instrumental parts of the song are the hip hop beats and those who produce them are referred to as beat makers.
Hip hop beats got their start in the late 1960s when DJs started using many breaks in a row to us as the backboned of the rhythm for their dance music. After this they would use two turntables from break to break to make a hip hop beat called a break beat. When sequencers and samplers came on to the scene allowing drum beats as well as samples to be maneuvered around with more accuracy. They were then able to be blended back in using more intricate new ways that allowed for more unique hip hop beats that vinyl alone had provided. This is how true hip hop beats and their production was born.
The core element of a hip hop beat and production is the drum beat. It is what gives hip hop beats their rhythm and the complexity of the drum beat establishes the pace and impact of the hip hop beat. While some hip hop beats are made with samples of drum beats, other are made by drum machines. Then there is a third type of drum beat used to make hip hop beats that is a hybrid of two where sample drum beats are rearranged into original patterns. Synthesizers are also used to produce drum sounds for hip hop beats.
Sampling for making hip hop beats got trickier in September of 2004 when the Nashville U.S. Court of Appeals made changes to what is considered copyright infringement in regards to music and made a ruling that in all cases of sampling that a license was required to use them for anything, including hip hop beats. Before this there was a small segment of songs that could be sampled with out permission. The had an immediate effect on the use of sampling to make hip hop beats and the industry began a move toward instrumentation.
Hip hop beats are finalized and used in a producer's studio where the music is all put together. A studio for making hip hop beats can be a simple as a collection of tapes and a four track sequencer to one with millions of dollars of equipment loaded with advanced sound producing hardware. A standard for recording hip hop beats is a multi-track recorder. Also a producer may choose to use a PC as the multi-track recorder, either with external hardware or with out, to make hip hop beats and music. They also like to use a condenser microphone when recording hip hop beats in the studio.
